It’s that exciting time of year for Ashtabula locals when Ohio State University football coach Urban Meyer and University of North Carolina at Charlotte 49ers football coach Dean Hood return home for the fifth annual Urban Meyer/Dean Hood Youth Football Camp held at SPIRE Institute on Wednesday July 6th.
Meyer, a 1982 St. John High School graduate, and Hood, a 1982 Harbor High School graduate, will coach area football players from first to eighth grade, alongside other local high school coaches.
The camp, which will be hosted by ESPN 970 WFUN, is expecting about 400 young athletes to participate. The athletes will be split up into groups by grade, where they will receive instruction from the two coaches, a pep talk from Meyer, lunch and a t-shirt.
Meyer has been with Ohio State University since 2012, leading the team to a National Championship in 2014. Under his leadership, 12 players were drafted in the 2016 NFL Draft and three players signed as Undrafted Free Agents.
Hood, former Eastern Kentucky University football coach, has recently taken a position at UNC Charlotte. At Kentucky, he was the 2008 Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year and the 2011 AFCA Regional Coach of the Year.
